Latin Programs

My suite of over 35 Latin programs was originally written for the BBC Model B computer. These programs were used in many UK schools and were also sent to other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United States.

They were used for many years at Colchester Royal Grammar School in Essex, where I was Head of Classics. They have since been rewritten for Windows and considerably extended.

The programs are flexible, easy to use, and instantly available from a desktop icon. They are particularly effective for individual study outside the classroom, but can also support classroom learning, homework and revision.

There are two main sets, one for GCSE and one for AS Level. The main difference between them is the vocabulary tested.

The vocabulary programs use the OCR Defined Vocabulary Lists and are arranged by parts of speech, helping students learn vocabulary systematically. Each section includes a multiple-choice test of meanings, followed by a more rigorous test requiring the correct Latin word to be typed in.

The programs also include noun-ending practice for the seven main Latin noun types, verb tests with selectable tenses, active and passive forms, deponent verbs, irregular verbs such as sum, possum, eo, volo and nolo, as well as subjunctive, infinitive and principal part tests.

Although the format is modern, the approach remains thorough: clear, systematic and demanding grammar and vocabulary practice.

Support is readily available if needed, but installation is simple and the programs are very easy to use.
