Running Vocabularies
Overview
Running vocabularies are designed to be available instantly as you read a text, without the need to search at the back of a book, turn to another page, or look through a small alphabetical list. While clicking on words in online texts can be useful, it can also be slow and distracting for learners.
I have been producing running vocabularies for around forty years. Over that time, they have developed considerably, especially with the help of new technology, improved tools for typing Greek on a computer, and the ability to download Greek and Latin texts and incorporate them directly into my own work.
I believe the current format offers an ideal solution: a landscape page layout, with the original text clearly presented on the left and the vocabulary carefully tailored to the relevant lines. This allows the reader to find the support they need almost instantly, with just a quick glance.
These resources are not intended to replace a full edition of the text. Instead, they are designed as a practical and effective aid for a first reading. Most of the running vocabularies now include the text itself, and all later versions will follow this format. Some older resources are vocabulary only and are arranged in newspaper-style columns.
Teachers currently using these materials have been delighted by the response from their students.
